Come and celebrate 40 years of the Quilters Guild at their birthday party on Thursday 1st August.
Enjoy a pre dinner drink followed by a three course menu and an after dinner speech from US art quilter Michael James.
Michael James is an artist and educator from the US. He was a prominent figure in the art quilt movement of the 1970s and his textiles have been recognised and exhibited internationally. Michael has a gallery at the Festival for the first time since 2006.
His lecture entitled Toward an Aesthetics of the Quilt will discuss the layers of meaning attached to quilts that are often difficult to sort. Quilts are widely claimed to be ‘Art’ and few would dispute their legitimacy as art objects. If quilts are indeed “Art”, does art language help us to explore and understand them? If we claim that an object is beautiful, what is happening in that object or inherent in that object that makes it so? If we take artistic meaning from such an object, can we ascribe or attribute artistic intent or purpose to its making? These questions will serve as points of reflection for a presentation illustrated by an eclectic assortment of quilts both old and new.
