Michael F James

Michael James is the creative principal of Michael James Studio Quilts, based in Lincoln, Nebraska. He is Professor Emeritus and Chair Emeritus of the Department of Textiles at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. His work is held in numerous private collections including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the Baltimore Art Museum, and the Shelburne Museum. He was one of a small group of artists, and one of the few men, who embraced the traditions of quilt making in the early 1970s and adapted them to non-traditional expression.

About This Gallery

The recent acquisition of the Michael James Studio Quilts Papers by the Archives and Special Collections Department at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln adds to a growing collection of documents that provide insights into the development of what today is known as the “Art Quilt” movement. James reflects here on the scope of his gift and provides examples of some of its content and its relationship to his creative work.
