Michael A. Cummings (b. 1945) is considered the leading African American male quilter. Since the late 1970s Cummings began creating fabric collage compositions, using appliqué techniques. He devotes time to research in African American culture and quilt making, translating this history into narratives within quilts.
Cummings crafts colourful interpretations of a diverse range of important historical figures (including James Baldwin, Josephine Baker and Nelson Mandella) as well as ritual and religious iconography.
“Cummings’ masterful quilts have brought him national and International attention and his work has been acquired by many notable public collections including Smithsonian, Brooklyn Museum, Museum of Spirits, The International Quilt Museum and The Getty Center.”
