Recycled: European Quilt Association (EQA)
For many centuries humans were required to re-use materials for as long as they possibly lasted, Patchwork and quilting are techniques born from this necessity, taking the principle of recycling to heights of perfection, beauty and art. Then disposability took over and the principle of recycling disappeared for a while.
Today the urgency surrounding sustainability, pollution, the need for careful management of Earth’s resources and the endangered future of the planet are back on the agenda, and on the minds of textile artists as well. The European Quilt Association decided to play on this aspect for the current challenge for its joint exhibition, making it the only requirement that a noticeable piece of recycled material must be included in the quilt of a size of 40 x 60cm.
Each of the 20 EQA member countries has selected and will present eight quilts based on both excellence of idea and execution. Each quilt reflects a highly individual approach in the unlimited use of patchwork and quilting techniques in interpreting the theme. Alongside art quilts conveying creative imagination and innovation are artworks that reflect a varied thematic approach and deep connection with ancient traditions.
