Silk Dupion
Silk Dupion
Silk Dupion is ideal for embroidery, patchwork, quilting, mounting lace, gold work, etc. It is also widely used for weddings (brides' and bridesmaids' dresses, ring cushions, gentlemen’s waistcoats, bows, sashes, etc), christening gowns, ball gowns and other formal wear, and also for home furnishing.

We have well over 100 colours of quality, pure silk dupion in stock. We sell it by the metre and in smaller pieces – see our website www.thesilkroute.co.uk.

Silk Dupion is the most widely known silk and ours is made in India. It is a medium weight silk. It has a slub that gives it a textured effect. The degree of texture does vary from colour to colour. The slubs in Silk Dupion occur when two silk worms spin cocoons close together. There are two types of Silk Dupion, handwoven Silk Dupion, which is more textured, and powerwoven Silk Dupion, which is smoother, although it still has some slub.

Natural Silks
Natural Silks
We stock a range of undyed silk fabrics. These are suitable for painting and dyeing as well as for the more traditional use of fabrics. If you are unsure of the most appropriate natural silk for your requirements why not try one of our Natural Silk Packs.

Natural silks stocked include: Silk Mouseline (a soft chiffon-like fabric suitable for layering and Nuno felting), Silk Organza (suitable for shadow work and Nuno felting), Silk Habotai (a medium weight, smooth fabric ideal for silk painting and silk scarves), Silk Noil (a more textured silk good for embroidery, clothing and stumpwork), Silk Dupion (for bridal, gold work and patchwork and quilting), Silk/Cotton (mixed yarn useful for Japanese embroidery and stumpwork), Silk Net (for veiling, conservation net embroidery and Carrickmacross lace) and Silk Velvet (ideal for dévoré).

We have a wide range of Silk Tussah, an unusual, textured silk in an unexpected variety of natural colours, including cream, stone, honey and deeper brown. Tussah is a textured silk which can be used to make elegant clothing such as jackets, skirts, etc. Using the different colours and variations in texture, it can also be used to make a distinctive cushion, jacket or waistcoat. Our range of Texture Silk Packs include 5 smaller pieces of Silk Tussah.

Our natural silks also include white Roly-Poly bundles and off-white Silk Sari Ribbons. These and all of our other natural silks are suitable for dyeing with natural or chemical dyes. All natural silks are available by the metre and in smaller pieces and can be seen on our website www.thesilkroute.co.uk.
Silk Sari Ribbons
Silk Sari Ribbons
Silk Sari Ribbons (sometimes known as Silk Sari Strips) consist of thin strips of mainly silk material stitched or knotted together in 1 length. They come in skeins of approximately 100 grams each and, as the type, weight and width of the silk used vary, lengths are typically 20 to 30 metres. They are made in India from recycled fabric.

Sari Ribbons can be used in a multitude of ways - wherever your imagination takes you! Uses include knitting, laying down on a background fabric to make a bag, picture, etc., embellishing, crochet, embroidery, wrapping, weaving, cord making, rag rug lockerhooking, pegloom weaving, stick weaving, etc.

We have a large selection of Sari Ribbons in multicoloured (both with and without ‘fuzzy’ edges), undyed (eminently suitable for dyeing) and a range of dyed ribbons – see our website www.thesilkroute.co.uk for our current range.
Silk Organza
Silk Organza
Silk Organza is an open woven fabric from India or China. It comes in a range of colours, many of which are shot. Silk Organza is also available in ivory and black.

It is widely used for layering and shadow work. It is also suitable to provide underskirt puff in bridal and other forms of dressmaking.

It is often used as a pressing cloth. The ivory Silk Organza can be dyed using natural or chemical dyes.

Silk Organza is available by the metre and in smaller sizes – see our website www.thesilkroute.co.uk.
Silk Theme Packs
Silk Theme Packs
Silk Theme Packs each contain 5 pieces of silk (usually silk dupion) in co-ordinated colours. These are ideal for patchwork, quilting, embroidery, appliqué and the miniaturist.

One pack is usually sufficient for a patchwork cushion front or small bag, two for a patchwork waistcoat front.

We also have Texture Silk Packs each containing 5 pieces of unusual and textured silks in natural stone or honey colours (mainly Silk Tussah) together with our Natural Silk Pack containing 5 pieces of different undyed silks suitable for painting, dyeing, embroidery, etc.

See our website www.thesilkroute.co.uk for our selection of Silk Packs.
