This very decorative project was inspired by the Elizabethan examples seen at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and by early English versions held at the De Witt Wallace Museum in Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia. Jane has designed and stitched her version of the Sweete bag as a simple holder for needlework tools.
The Special Sampler box is an exploding box made from covered card with all four sides stitched and a decorated stitched lid. The box includes hand made pockets inside, plus a little tray for stitching bits and pieces and a biscornu pincushion. The version in the picture shows the biscornu pincushion attached to the lid but this is optional.
The book takes you through cross stitching on linen and then on to hemstitch, Hardanger, darning, pulled thread embroidery, beading and more. This is such a satisfying project to stitch - you work a page at a time and then all the pages are slip stitched in to the hemmed cover. The pages are constructed in such a way that the back of your work does not show.
This design is created by working the cross stitch design twice. The stitching must be made of two absolute squares. The shape may be created on aida fabric if you prefer. The chart includes pure cross stitch and backstitch only and no fractional stitches. The tiny glass beads are added to the greenery when the cross stitch is complete. There are four designs in this series - Poppy, Violets and Pansies, Strawberries and Buttercups and Daisies.
