Making Mitred Borders and Bindings

By Dawn Cameron-Dick

Traditionally quilters love the look of mitred borders and bindings, but often find it just too difficult, so resort to straight sets. In this workshop Dawn will show you how easy it is to do both of these techniques without any specialty tools. The only things you’ll need are a sewing machine and walking foot.

Dawn will show you several quilts using printed borders which look amazing when perfectly mitred and some with generic prints that can be done in a flash.

She will present a double French folded, straight grain binding that will transform the final finish on your quilts.

Remember you can stop, rewind and play the workshop, at your leisure so don’t worry about any time constraints. You will be delighted to see how easily you can transform your quilts with mitred borders and bindings!

About the tutor

Dawn Cameron-Dick

Dawn is a self-taught traditional quilter who began making quilts in the mid 1970s while living in Saudi Arabia. When she returned to America in the 1980s she opened one of the first quilting shops in Colorado where she honed her skills learning from some of the quilting “greats”. After moving to Belgium she continued as the only professional, English speaking quilting teacher in the Benelux area. With the help of the US Ambassador she curated a month long quilt exhibit in a chateau in Luxembourg which culminated in her being instrumental in starting both the Belgian and Luxembourg guilds.

Once Dawn gained her British citizenship in the early 1990s she began teaching fulltime in the UK and expanded to teaching worldwide including the Houston Quilt Festival and QuiltEuro. She has written four books including one for C&T Publishing. Two on her signature technique Invisible Machine Applique and two on her speciality, Needles & Threads. Dawn has presented on a TV sales channel, filmed classes for Just Hands on TV and filmed her own DVDs. “I am delighted to have taught and lectured at every Festival of Quilts since its beginning and continue to make my livelihood traveling the world to teach. I’ve now opened my own studio in Somerset where I offer workshops for 1-5 students in a very friendly and personal environment.” Said Dawn.
